This beautiful art print shows the historic Durham Cathedral as seem from the River Wear with the Old Fulling Mill. Illustrated in the retro Travel Poster or Railway Poster style popular in the early twentieth century, it gives a nostalgic twist to a modern contemporary artwork. It is perfect for any lover of this magnificent building and city in north east England. Ideal as gift for someone special or as a treat to yourself.
The artwork has been created by Mara Louvain Robinson, is exclusive to Alchemi Art and it is not available from any other retailers or online sites.
Durham Cathedral is a World Heritage Site and known worldwide for its beautiful design and architecture. The religious history of the site goes back to St Cuthbert and the monks from Lindisfarne with the present building replacing earlier churches. The current Norman building opened in 1133. It houses the tombs and relics of two Anglo Saxon Saints, St Cuthbert and St Bede. There was also an active Benedictine monastery until its dissolution in 1540 on orders of King Henry VIII. The cathedral was also notably used by Oliver Cromwell in 1650 as a prison to hold Scottish prisoners of war where many died.
The Old Fulling Mill on the banks of the River Wear dates to the 17th Century and often features in images of Durham City. It has also housed museums which form part of Durham University such as the Archeology Museum.
