Facts about Butterflies

  • There are depictions of Butterflies in art going back thousands of years.  In fact, the oldest are 3500 years old and appear in Egyptian frescos in Thebes.
  • Many butterflies can ‘taste’ the leaves they land on with their feet.  This allows them to tell if the leaf would be a good place to lay their eggs.
  • There are about 18,500 named species of butterflies and over 140,000 named species of moth.  At the present time, it’s believed there are 59 species currently living in Britain.
