Durham as it is today was founded in 995AD by Anglo Saxon monks seeking a new home for the body and relics of St Cuthbert. The legend says that the monks had wandered for years after being displaced by Viking raids and the cart with the body refused to move when it reached the site where Durham Cathedral now stands. More likely the peninsula with the river bending round it was considered a safe defensible position, and possibly they were tired of moving about. However there is archeological evidence that the city actually dates back 2000BC.
The Cathedral which now standing on the highpoint of the city was built later by the Normans and along with Durham University forms the heart of the modern city. Durham also gives it’s name to County Durham and is home to the counties Council and local government.
